Today, we want to show you one of the most unique cities in the world, Shenzhen, China. With its rapid growth and transformation from a small fishman village in the past, now a mega city and a hub of technology and still growing. In 1979, Premier Deng Xiaoping named Shenzhen a Special Economic Zone, meaning it would be immune from the strict Communist regime governing the rest of the country and would instead be permitted to pursue private enterprise. Shenzhen's official population was 12 million and it had a GDP of 500 billion RMB, according to the Asia Society. "Has any urban area on Earth ever grown so rapidly and changed so dramatically in such a short time as Shenzhen?" Shenzhen seems to be just in the middle of growing, in the year 2016, it's still in the building of more metro ...

Shenzhen is a major city in Guangdong Province, China. Situated immediately north of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the area became China’s first and one of the most successful Special Economic Zones. It currently also holds sub-provincial administrative status, with powers slightly less than a province. According to the Government report for 2014, Shenzhen had a population of 10,628,900 and a metropolitan area population of over 18 million. Shenzhen’s modern cityscape is the result of its vibrant economy made possible by rapid foreign investment since the institution of the policy of “reform and opening” establishment of the SEZ in late 1979, before which it was only a market town called Sham Chun-Hui (literally Shenzhen Market) which the Kowloon-Canton Railway passes through. ...

“In the 1950s, the people’s way of life was just as farmers,” 65-year-old Zhuang Tiefeng explained， standing on a roof pointing to areas of land now occupied by large city buildings. “After the opening up and reforms, Shuiwei village had experienced huge changes. The old way of farming gave way to new industry and business and we were given city IDs.” In 1979, Shuiwei was incorporated into the new city of Shenzhen as part of a government drive to establish special economic zones around China. Shenzhen now houses a population of over 10 million people and is widely considered one of the world’s fastest growing cities. Much of its success has come from foreign and domestic investments into new manufacturing plants. Special economic zones were established in three other cities- Shantou,...
By now, China has merged nine of its cities into one, creating the largest metropolitan area on the planet. This new megacity has a population of 42 million – over 7 million greater than Tokyo, the previous record holder. The cities being merged include Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the second and third largest cities in China with populations of 11.7 million and 8.9 million, respectively. This region covers much of China's manufacturing heartland, accounting for nearly a tenth of the Chinese economy. Around 150 major infrastructure projects have meshed the transport, energy, water and telecommunications networks of these nine cities together, at a cost of some 2 trillion yuan ($304 billion). An express railway line connects the hub with nearby Hong Kong.* By the end of the decade, even large...
